This summer, I’ve been obsessed with slip dresses and skirts in all of their varying manifestations – mini, midi, satin, printed – and the obsession has not subsided, especially since finding they are exceedingly maternity friendly.
So before we get into how I styled my newest favorite slip dress, let’s engage in some real talk. Pregnancy ain’t easy!
I know that seems pretty obvious, but despite not having any delusions that it would be, the reality is you can never truly understand or anticipate how you will feel/cope/look until you experience it. As I approach the 6 month mark (I know, I can’t believe how quickly time is going by either), I can honestly say that I’ve been rather fortunate. As compared to the experience of so many other women, friends and family included, I’ve had it relatively easy so far – nausea, but without vomiting, diminished energy, but still able to get through the workday with energy to make it to the gym on occasion, no swelling, high blood pressure or even intense cravings. However, the one thing I didn’t think much of pre-pregnancy or expect to have so much difficulty with is how I feel about my changing body and the everyday struggle of getting dressed. Nothing fits (at least nothing I previously owned), nothing is comfy and barely anything looks good on. For someone who has always had the innate ability to know what to wear and how to dress her body, the sudden difficulty of getting dressed has been one of the hardest parts of pregnancy (that and not being able to drink wine). In preparation for our upcoming trip to Spain and Portugal, over the last 3 weeks (I didn’t want to order anything too early and risk outgrowing everything), I’ve made no less than 6 large, and I mean LARGE orders of clothing from my favorite online purveyors and have returned 95% or more of each order. #thestruggleisreal
A few months ago, before I started showing, but after our summer trip was planned, SDP and I were shopping in Soho when I found the prettiest bright green python slip dress from Whistles to add to my upcoming vacation wardrobe. Although my body had not yet changed much, I had already discovered that slip dresses with their figure skimming silhouettes and lack of seams were particularly comfy and forgiving on my new, ever changing body. Thankfully, my purchase did not prove to be premature because 3 months later, the dress still looks and feel great on – lightweight, breezy and body skimming without being tight. To create the perfect European summer look, I paired the dress with silver ruffled block heels slides from Loeffler Randall and cowrie shell necklaces. Finally, I carried a white python clutch from Gigi New York. I can’t wait to prance around the streets of Lisbon in this pretty python number.
