This Spring, the super wide-leg trouser is the go-to pant silhouette. Finally, a refreshing change from the super skinny pant silhouette, which I find so difficult to pull off due to my not so skinny, but rather athletic legs. Back in the day, circa late 90’s/early 2000’s, I think these babies were better known as – palazzo pants – you know, those ultra-voluminous pantaloons the aunties and grannies used to swish around in at weddings and Sweet 16’s. Well, luckily for us, their most recent 2017 revival is way less polyester/jersey/glitter-centric and far truer to its 70’s origins in beautiful cotton, silk crepe or satin. The best part of this trend? They flatter every height and shape by highlighting and minimizing the female form in all the right places. Whether a sleek pair in a dark solid, printed in a fun floral or striped for a little extra height – you can’t go wrong.
How-to-Style the Wide Leg Trouser:
- Fit: Be sure the waistband fits snugly on you natural waist if a high-waisted trouser or on the hips if a lower rise trouser.
- Sizing: Size or tailor the pant so that the legs skim your hip and upper thighs – they should never be tight or pull while standing.
- Length: Pants should skim the floor with your shoes of choice and not hang too high or drag on the ground.
- Where it With: A fitted top for a super sleek look; or, a classic collared shirt, billowy blouse or t-shirt, but be sure to highlight the waistline by tucking in your top or belting at the waist in order to avoid too much overall volume.
Last weekend, I headed out for a blogger event in Soho and could not wait to show off my new striped black, white and camel ultra wide leg trousers (which happen to look almost exactly like the Chloe Striped Wide Leg Trousers that I have been coveting since the beginning of the season). To emphasize my waist, I went with a nude sheer mesh-back bodysuit with notch front detail and threw on an oversized denim jacket for something casual and a little unexpected. I kept accessories to a minimum, with a few gold pieces from Miansai and a black top handle flap tote bag, but upped the retro style quotient by wearing a pair of novelty oversized clear glasses. Finally, for a little height and to keep thing sleek, I wore a pair of camel single strap nude heeled sandals.
