Trend Alert: The Slip Dress

The Slip Dress.  I, like you, seem to vaguely remember it being a thing at some point during the mid 90’s (circa 90210/clueless days), but like all 90’s trends right now (chokers, flannel shirts, dark lips, bombers and mules), its made a major comeback.  And, with all the new and fresh ways to wear the slip dress, it’s sure to be a trend that will last at least a few more seasons. So, here are a few tips on how to style a slip dress.

Wear it with heels:  For a sleek, but super sexy night look, wear a satin or velvet mini, midi or maxi length slip with a pair of single strap heels, cage heels or sky-high pumps. Accessorize with your favorite black velvet choker for a truly 90’s inspired look or something shimmery on the neck or ears for a more modern and glamorous look.

Wear it with sneakers:  For a more casual look, wear a mini or midi length slip dress with your new favorite white or black sneakers.  Then throw on a classic denim jacket or bomber to complete this casual, but super styled look.

Wear it with a basic t-shirt, turtleneck or sweater: For a fall/winter look, wear a slip dress layered over a striped or solid fitted t-shirt, turtleneck or sweater.

Wear it with a blazer:  For an office friendly look, wear your knee length or midi slip with a tailored blazer and your favorite pair of heels or loafers.

Here’s how I wore the slip dress for NYFW.  Earlier this week, I was attending a NYFW event and couldn’t wait to wear my favorite slip dress. At the beginning of the summer, I bought a classic, slinky silver satin midi slip dress for my upcoming vacation in Bermuda and couldn’t wait to wear it again and differently (while in Bermuda, I wore it with a simple silver metal choker and a pair of silver slides – see below for a pic).  For the event, I wanted more of a Fall look, and styled the slip dress by draping a brown suede motorcycle jacket  over my shoulders, wearing a pair of black suede high heeled v-cut ankle boots and carrying my classic Chanel flap bag.  For accessories, I kept things simple but sparkly with diamond studs, a long draped crystal chain necklace and my Cluse Minuit mesh gold watch with black face.

Style Tip: I know some of you are weary about mixing blacks and browns (and there are all these outdated fashion rules about it), but I’m a huge fan so long as the styles and textures of your black and brown pieces remain consistent.  So, although my jacket was brown and my boots were black, they were both suede, and the overall look remained cohesive.
