Maternity Shoot | Look 1

I am so excited to share the first of three looks from my maternity shoot.

Who knew that less than one week after these photos were taken baby Rafa would be making his big debut! Steph and I had been talking about a maternity shoot for some time, but between our hectic work schedules and my preparation for the baby, we weren’t able to schedule a time until my 38th week (yikes!). Most photographers suggest that maternity photos are best captured between 29 and 36 weeks (i.e. before you’re too big or too uncomfortable).

Pregnancy is truly beautiful and now that I’ve experienced it, it’s no surprise why so many women and couples want to capture this very special moment in a professional photography session. However, we’ve all seen terrible maternity photography, from heart hands over bellies to awkward overly sensual couple photography, and I was deathly afraid of falling into the cheese trap. So, when I started looking for inspiration from maternity photography greats like Lola Melani, I was adamant that the images I create be elegant, classic and clean – from the backdrop to the looks.

Since I was so close to my due date, Steph helped me to create an in-home studio. She erected a gorgeous gray seamless paper backdrop in the middle of our living room and relied on natural light (thankfully, it was a relatively bright winter day). For my first look, I opted for classic waves courtesy of DryBar, neutral makeup, minimal jewelry and a black knit form-fitting turtleneck dress to create a sleek silhouette (thankfully, the dress fit although I purchased it weeks earlier).

I couldn’t be happier with how this first look and set of images came out. Thank you Steph for making my vision a reality.
