One of my favorite new trends are culottes – you know, those midi-length, super-wide, somewhat flowy, skirt-like trousers – that you’ve been seeing everywhere. Admittedly, I was a little nervous to try this silhouette – wide and cropped can be a dangerous combination for a woman’s body (especially if you’re on the shorter side, like me). But, as with all clothing items, ensuring the right fit is essential. Here are two fit tips for culottes: (1) the waist should fit close to the body and not oversized (you don’t want the pants to slouch or it will make the overall look sloppy) and (2) the hem of the pant should be slightly below the knee to mid-calf length (any longer and your leg will appear shorter and wider and no girl wants that).
Although culottes are super versatile (you can wear them to the office, to brunch or for a night out), styling them can be a little tricky. Here are three styling tips for choosing the right top: (1) opt for a more tailored/structure top, which offers a nice balance to the flowing bottom; (2) go crop over a longer length to ensure the right proportions for your body and (3) tuck in t-shirts, amorphous and oversized tops to show your waist and not get lost in a sea of fabric.
Here’s how I wore my tailored ivory culottes for a night out in the MPD. Since it was a weekend night, I knew I could go a little fance and went for a disco inspired look and paired my culottes with a gold, low v-neck cami (that I tucked to show my natural waist). For accessories, I opted for all gold and champagne toned items – champagne Gucci mini chain bag, champagne glitter fabric Jimmy Choo sandals, gold and pearl bangle, gold and silver DVF cuff and drapey gold chain arm band.
