How to Crochet Simple Winter Accessories for Your Little One

There’s something about babies that always brings me back to crocheting – one of my favorite hobbies. And, with all this time at home and indoors during these chilly winter months, it was only natural that I make a few special pieces for our baby boy.

The last few weeks have been a bit of a whirlwind (perhaps another time, I’ll write a longer post about it) and I apologize for having gone MIA (the first time since I started the blog in 2015), but I assure you the break was necessary. During this short social media hiatus, I wasn’t entirely unproductive, but turned to crafting for some welcome and soothing distraction. Momming after all is a full time job, but I also used the time to crochet some winter accessories – a hat with pom poms and infinity loop scarf – for our little guy that are super simple to make (great projects for crochet novices).

Tools & Supplies
  • 1 Ball of Bernat Baby Velvet YarnI absolutely adore this yarn for its warmth and softness – perfect for babies. This yarn can also be washed and dried on delicate settings.
  • 5.5 mm Crochet Hook Look to the wrapping on the yarn to determine the appropriate hook size for your project. For baby projects, I often like to size up on my hook so the final product is extra soft and flexible.
  • Darning/Yarn NeedleYou’ll need a yarn needle to sew the scarf together, cinch the hat, attach pom poms and sew in loose ends.
  • Craft Scissors
Basic Stitches

For these accessories, you will need to know the following basic stitches in order to follow the pattern for the hat and scarf.

How to Make a Baby Hat with Pom Poms

To make the hat, I started with a simple crochet baby beanie. Although the following tutorial will provide you with the exact number of stitches necessary for 0-3 months, I suggest measuring the baby’s head to determine the appropriate circumference and length. Also, if you’d like a thicker fold, add a few extra stitches to the length. See video tutorial here.

To make your own pom poms, see video tutorial here. For fluffier pom poms, wrap more yarn around the donut. To create larger pom poms, increase the size of your donut.

Finally, attach your pom poms to the beanie with a yarn needle and knot to keep the pom poms in place.

How to Make Baby Infinity Scarf

To make the baby infinity scarf, see tutorial video here. The video is for an adult sized scarf, so be sure to measure baby to determine the appropriate length and size accordingly. I love this scarf because you can keep baby’s neck warm without worrying about wrapping the scarf around baby’s neck or it falling off.
