Burgundy & Blue: Navy Military Coat with Fur Collar, Blue and Burgundy Check Shirt, Dark Wash High-Waisted Skinny Jeans and Wide-Brimmed Burgundy Fedora

Earlier this week, I had a date with two of my favorites, SDP and Baby K, for some much needed chat time.  We planned for a night in at their gorgeous Chelsea apartment, but as things go in NYC, I wanted to be adequately cute in case we headed out for a bite.

With the weather finally turning wintry, I was ready to break out some extra accessories to combat the cold, namely, this gorgeous wide-brimmed burgundy fedora that I purchased in the fall.  With the hat as my centerpiece, I built my outfit around it, which quickly became a menswear-inspired look – fedora, collared-button down shirt, tailored coat.

Deep shaded check patterns are super popular right now, especially for menswear (who said we can’t borrow inspo from the guys), and I had the perfect top to match the fedora, a navy and burgundy large check shirt that I purchased at Zara last season.  I paired the top with deep indigo True Religion skinny jeansblack platform booties, and Chanel classic flap bag.  To add just a little sparkle and femininity, I wore a rhinestone statement necklace.  And finally, to pull the look and colors together (and for warmth, it is winter after-all), I wore a  navy J.Crew military coat with fur collar and the prettiest gold buttons that Sis bought me this past birthday.

Style Tip – Colors: Burgundy can be worn boldly or in a more neutral fashion depending on how you pair it with other colors.  Think contrast for a bolder look, like pairing burgundy with cream.  For a more neutral look, try wearing shades of burgundy for a monochromatic effect, or as I wore it, burgundy with other deep colors, like navy, forest green or black.

Style Tip -Different ways to wear your collared button down:  For this outfit, I wanted a more polished/tailored look, so I tucked and buttoned to the top.  But,  for a more sexy/playful look, try tying the shirt at the waist into a simple knot and leaving a few buttons open at the top or leave the shirt fully untucked for a more casual vibe.
